Leuk stukje op Juno over de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse techno-scene. Van Speedy J en Steve Rachmad tot Delta Funktionen en Legowelt, de Nederlandse techno bloeit al meer dan 20 jaar. Mooi dat dit ook in het buitenland wordt opgemerkt:
Holland doesn’t have the same status as Detroit or Chicago or boast the kind of game-changing clubs that New York and Berlin have been home to, but its importance in electronic music spheres cannot be understated.
Despite Holland being a small country, since the early 90s the creativity and freethinking approach that Dutch artists embraced have ensured that it punches way above its weight.
The outside world first came to know about Dutch techno and house during the early to mid-90s thanks to groundbreaking releases by Speedy J, Gerd, Like A Tim, Steve Rachmad, Erik ‘Shiver/Essit Muzique’ Van Den Broek and Stefan ‘Terrace/Florence’ Robbers and labels like 100% Pure, Eevo Lute, Djax-Up Beats and Outland – which provided platforms for local and international talent.
Around the same time, that other less palatable Dutch musical style, gabba, was exploding, introducing a violent, testosterone-fuelled undercurrent to hardcore dance music. ‘Gabber’ translates from Dutch as ‘pal’ or ‘mate’ and was used as a term of endearment by the amphetamine-riddled skinheads who populated these events.
While gabba endured, Holland’s second wave of techno and house also emerged during the late 90s and early noughties. Spearheaded by Amsterdam’s Delsin label, it provided a home for Newworldaquarium’s spacey house, Aroy Dee’s deep techno and Aardvarck’s abstract beats. It was also during this period that I-F put out Space Invaders are Smoking Grass, a release that inadvertently served as a catalyst for the rise of electroclash.
While I-F had been making visceral techno since the early 90s as Unit Moebius and came from the same acid-soaked squat scene as the long-running Bunker label, the Space Invaders single and timeless Mixed Up In The Hague DJ mixes put the spotlight firmly on the Hague and Holland’s West Coast electro-Italo-jack sound that includes Legowelt, Alden Tyrell, Dexter and Orgue Electronique as well as labels like Viewlexx, Creme and of course Clone.
Fast forward a decade and Clone, along with Amsterdam’s Rush Hour, operate as global hubs for US house and techno focused-music through their three-pronged label-shop-distribution approach. Meanwhile, 2562 and Martyn have offered unique perspectives on bass music. In parallel, the past few years have seen two new Dutch producers, Delta Funktionen (aka Niels Luinenberg) and Conforce (aka Boris Bunnik) revisit the techno sound that originally put Holland on the international map.
Ahh, Awakefest. Op je gemakje met trein en bus naar het bal; even een lekker bakkie halen; een beetje rondlopen op houten vlonders over een verregend, maar niet minder feestelijk festivalterrein; en de hele dag niets anders dan luisteren naar de beste en meest diverse techno-artiesten op dat moment bij elkaar in Nederland, Europa en de wereld. Wat kan er mooier zijn? Helemaal niets natuurlijk.
Afgelopen editie was een modderpoel, maar een briljante modderpoel, een snoepdoos en een kermis vol met beats, melodieën en kleurrijke hoogtepunten. Zoals de Volkskrantreeds schreef, waar moet je als liefhebber naartoe op zo’n dag? Op 1 moment kan je kiezen tussen Pantha du Prince, Jeff Mills, Len Faki én Luciano. Je moet er wat dat betreft maar het beste van maken, zoveel mogelijk hoogtepunten meepakken, en gelukkig hebben we later de filmpjes nog.
Hét hoogtepunt voor ons was Jeff Mills. De combinatie van licht en geluid, en de ge-ni-a-le set die deze weggaf met de TR-909 was pure science fiction. Bekijk het zelf op dit onofficiële, maar muzikaal nog best ok’e filmpje. Extreem opzwepend.
Hierna was in dezelfde vliegtuighanggar van een Y-tent het woord aan Joris Voorn, hier en daar beschouwd als hoogtepunt van het festival. Supercool om te zien waren de bordjes met ‘Joris’ die mensen vooraan omhoog hielden; de liefde hing werkelijk voelbaar in de lucht bij de opening van deze vrolijke set.
Ook heel aardig was Len Faki. Check hier de superrelaxte, melodieuze, jazzy afsluiter van zijn set, een klassieker van Laurent Garnier (die er trouwens zelf ook bij was):
Egbert timmert goed aan de weg de laatste tijd. Hieronder zijn melodieuze set in de nieuwe C-area. Überhaupt was dit de teneur van het festival: heel mooi dat organisator Rocco Veenboer op Awakenings naast de welbekende rolling train-techno stampveteranen als Mills, Chris Liebing en Speedy J de ruimte geeft aan opkomende gasten uit de underground met hun meer melodieuze, housy edoch superopzwepende geluid.
Trouw-resident Melon deed het in de middag ook lekker in de meer relaxte A-tent (waar Pantha du Prince overigens later voor de enige teleurstelling zorgde; in tegenstelling tot op een festival als Melt!, waar de boxen zoals immer bij de oosterburen toch een tikkie beter zijn, viel hier de nuance volledig weg). Terug naar het hardere werk. Speedy J is gewoon altijd goed, en zo ook nu weer.
Acid is back. I concluded that when I looked back at 2010. In a few days the new Boys Noize compilation Super Acid will be released. Dutch DJ/producer Benny Rodrigues has made a great contribution. It is a timeless track that could easily have been a floor killer in a 1991 Speedy J set. A nice tribute to classic Dutch house. Enjoy:
This weekend’s Awakenings at the Gashouder in Amsterdam was once again a great edition. Below, a couple of clips from the Friday to capture the atmosphere; the sound quality isn’t always the best, although it’s fine at the first two clips.
Altijd erg prettig wanneer een organisatie niet onresponsief staat tegenover kritiek. Blijkens de verschillende fora lag de line-up van de aankomende Awakenings Weekender, 8 en 9 oktober, onder vuur vanwege te minimal. Hield mijzelf ook tegen om een kaartje aan te schaffen. Echter, met de toevoeging van techno-koning Speedy J aan het vrijdagprogram ziet het er ineens een stuk florissanter uit! Tickets in de pocket.

Andere luminaries zijn Paco Osuna, Adam Beyer, Lutzenkirchen, Ben Sims, Dave Clarke, Marcel Dettman & Ben Klock, Gui Boratto en James Holden. Damn, ik word gek.
