Als je abonnee bent van de Volkskrant, sla vandaag dan vooral het paginagrote interview met Eddy Wally (77) niet over. Het is natuurlijk geen toeval dat op de dag dat men in de VS zo een belangrijke sociaal-politieke stap zet er een interview is met “the American Dream, maar dan in België”. Ook wel bekend als “The Voice of Europe”, “le chanteur de charme” en “de Vlaamse Elvis Presley”. Hier een paar prachtige quotes:

Krijgt u nog steeds veel vrouwelijke aandacht? Nog steeds, nog steeds. Neem dat maar van mij aan. Ze trekken hun trui omlaag en dan moet ik handtekeningen zetten. Handtekeningen van Eddy Wally. Och! Ik ben een artiest. Ik ben altijd omringd door de schoonste en rijkste vrouwen van de wereld, ze lagen allemaal aan mijn voeten. Maar ik heb mijn vrouwtje nooit in de steek gelaten. Daar hebben ze veel bewondering voor, de Nederlanders.
De huiskamer staat vol: met plastic bloemstukken, Mariabeelden, vergeelde knuffels, gouden platen, hoeden en ingelijse krantenknipsels. Cadeautjes van fans, zegt Wally. Hij bewaart alles. Het gouden plakkaat met het opschrift ‘Eddy Wally Internationaal’, dat naast de voordeur hing, is net voor de tweede keer gestolen. Op de bank ligt een grote pluchen tijger. Wally – paars geruit kostuum, witte laarsjes met hak, hoed, grote roze zonnebril: ‘Nemen jullie straks met mij een champagne, juffrouws?
Heeft u nog dromen? Ik zit met twee plannen. Verstaat u mij? Een Eddy Wally Museum, in Zelzate. Net Elvis Presley, je weet niet wat je ziet, met 150 van mijn kostuums, met gouden platen, met muren vol mooie foto’s van mij. Ongelooflijk. En ik zou graag de koning van België nog willen ontmoeten. Ik ben al ridder, maar ik wil nog graag baron worden.

In een concept-verkiezingsprogramma van D66 is een volledige paragraaf te vinden waarin het zijn standpunt over games kenbaar maakt. De politieke partij wil de ontwikkeling van kunstzinnige games stimuleren. D66 vindt daarnaast ook dat de overheid zich niet mag bemoeien met de inhoud van games in het algemeen.
Dit heeft Control, een vakblad voor gamesindustrie, ons weten te vertellen. Volgens hun site heeft D66 meer dan genoeg aandacht voor de gamesindustrie. Opvallend is dat games in het hoofdstuk Media en Cultuur expliciet vermeld staat als ‘cultuur’. Het concept is geschreven door Ruud Hendriks, oud topman van RTL en Endemol.
Op het partijcongres in april zullen we zien of de paragraaf het definitieve programma zal bereiken.
This mix has been online for a week, but I’ll post it nonetheless. Uniting two disparate genres (although not too much, as The xx have covered Aaliyah as well), it works really well. Shows in particular how great The xx, which I have only recently come to appreciate after a few listening sessions of their album xx, actually are… A simple guitar line and backing vocals, but adding a lot to the rhymes.

Detroit, a city for years afflicted by unemployment, crime, a dwindling population (from 2 million in 1950 to 0.9 million today) and entire abandoned neighbourhoods, is looking to radically downsize, and convert into a rural landscape, in order to survive.
Detroit, the very symbol of American industrial might for most of the 20th century, is drawing up a radical renewal plan that calls for turning large swaths of this now-blighted, rusted-out city back into the fields and farmland that existed before the automobile.Operating on a scale never before attempted in this country, the city would demolish houses in some of the most desolate sections of Detroit and move residents into stronger neighborhoods. Roughly a quarter of the 139-square-mile city could go from urban to semi-rural.
Near downtown, fruit trees and vegetable farms would replace neighborhoods that are an eerie landscape of empty buildings and vacant lots. Suburban commuters heading into the city center might pass through what looks like the countryside to get there. Surviving neighborhoods in the birthplace of the auto industry would become pockets in expanses of green.

Like acid rain and the Amazon rainforest, whale hunting has been a central enviromental concern for years. Everybody knows the “Save the whale” campaigns by such organizations as Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund. Starting in the 1980s, though, increased regulation and international agreements have greatly reduced whale hunting. So the question is: did we save the whale?
Well, it all depends on what you mean by save. If you mean, “Did we stop the wide-scale commercial slaughter of whales?,” then yes, we did. (More on that in a minute.) If you mean, “Are the whales thriving in our oceans?,” then that’s another story.

In 1946, 15 countries—including the biggest players in the industry, such as Norway, Britain, Japan, and the USSR—established the International Whaling Commission. The body was charged with setting annual catch limits and overseeing research on whale populations. By the early 1980s, many additional non-whaling nations had joined the commission, in the hopes of pushing it to take a more protectionist stance. In 1982, conservationists who for years had been calling for the elimination of big whale hunts finally got their wish: The IWC voted to place a total freeze on commercial whaling, beginning four years later. Chalk one up for the “save the whales” campaign.

Three remaining whaling nations are free to set their own catch quotas.In the last five years, whalers from those countries have killed between 1,700 and 1,900 animals annually. That’s much less than in the days before the moratorium took effect, when hunters were catching around 10,000 animals a year. But the kill levels have increased steadily since the late 1980s.

So whales, for the most part, have had a 24-year reprieve from hunters’ harpoons. Have they recovered in the meantime?
Depending on how you do the taxonomy, hunters have traditionally gone after around 15 different species, collectively known as the great whales. Five of those species are described as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Among the rest, the sperm whale is considered vulnerable (the level below endangered), while five others—including that 1970s singing sensation, the humpback whale—are of least concern, meaning they’re not going extinct anytime soon, even though they might not have returned to their pre-whaling levels. Most hunters nowadays pursue the common minke whale, which is also doing pretty well, all things considered. For a few other large whale species, there aren’t enough data to make calls in either direction.
Things get more complicated, though, when you drill down and look at subpopulations. For example, humpback whales may doing fine as a general rule, but the ones that live in the Arabian Sea are considered endangered, as are those around Australia and the South Pacific. And then there are the humpbacks around South Georgia, which were mostly wiped out between 1904 and 1915 and have yet to come back.
I was, indeed, hoping for an ending sort of like this.
