‘art / photography’ Archives

Smashing The Sound Barrier

I had no idea, but this is apparently what it looks like when an airplane breaks the sound barrier. More pictures here.

A Brief History Of John Baldessari

A nice short video narrated by Tom Waits about the career of John Baldessari -- one of America’s most influential postwar modern artists (best known for his photographs and movie stills with brightly coloured dots on them).

Ferienne

Ferienne‘ by Afiq Omar is a study on ‘fluid dynamics, magnetism and cymatics’. Makes for an impressive short video.

Ferienne is the third installment of an ongoing experimental study on fluid dynamics, magnetism and cymatics. These invisible forces of nature are then made visible through various liquids and mixtures, and they form patterns that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye.

I then manipulated these patterns to compose analog visual effects & using simple editing techniques, create motion graphics that are natural and organic. The basis of it remains simple; to create visually engaging images that are unique and can never be repeated.

I focused more on achieving clean and precise images this time around using a massive amount of material collected over the past 8 weeks. The colour palette was kept similar to that of the human skin, and the textures were manipulated using different backgrounds, further pushing the limits of trypophobia; the fear of holes.

Earth

A very simple yet effective idea. Earth by Peter Callesen is a helium filled huge balloon suspended over a building in Copenhagen, giving the impression of looking at the Earth from another planet.

Dieselpunk Concept Art

It’s not cyberpunk, it’s not steampunk… It’s dieselpunk! Great retrofuturistic concept art. Click to enlarge. More here.

People Of Burning Man

A carnivalesque promotion video of a book containing photographs by photographer Julian Cash of Burning Man visitors over many years. Looks pretty cool.

Outer Space

A beautiful short movie, made of original pictures from NASA’s Cassini and Voyager missions. It’s always a bit amazing to me that these spacecraft have actually been there and taken this footage of these actual planets. For a normal human being these planets are kind of abstract, but they really exist out there floating in space, and can be observed. Hopefully even by people one day.

The Space We Live In

An absolutely marvous short movie of a number of galaxies and nebulas, with an appropriate musical score. Definitely recommended whilst high.

I wonder if it is based on real star maps – as science has only recently discovered what the large scale structure of the universe (in terms of solar systems, galaxies, clusters, superclusters and filaments) looks like.

3D Gif Monsters

Check out these trippy stereographic Gif drawings of monsters by artist Dain Fagerholm. And stare at them for a while.

Pixelated Design

If you must hipsterfy your household, well, then consider these pixelated furniture objects and accessoires.

Actually I think that garbage can is pretty cool.

Buzludzha Monument

High up in the Balkan Mountain range in Bulgaria stands the Buzludzha Monument. After a 7-year construction period, it was opened in 1981 as a testament to the greatness of Soviet Communism and the history of Bulgaria. It resembles something like a UFO, and is, well, one of those highlights of retrofuturist Communist architectural aesthetics. It also contains a time capsule for future generations. After the fall of the regime, however, it fell into decline.

This guy visited the monument in midwinter this year. That’s a pretty hazardous trek, but the resulting photos are stunning. He also flew a microlight over it to capture it from above. So check out these incredibly cool pictures – definitely worth your while.

Here’s how it used to look:

This it how it looks now:More here

The City Of Samba

A very nice tilt-shift video of the carnival in Rio.

Terrace On Ice

I’m no fan of winter, ice, or ice-related activities. But this is pretty fucking awesome.

Styles Of Music

Design companies Edit, Toko and several other designers have cooperated on the Edits by Edit series:

Curated by Edit, a select group of designers around the globe were commisioned to visualize and grasp the essence of a musical genre visualized by using just one element and one typeface.

More posters here.

Unfortunately these beautiful posters were printed in a very limited edition and are no longer available.

Surface Detail

Check out this amazing fractal rendering with myriads of details on the surface. Beautiful to behold.

Love & Theft

Check out this extremely cool and trippy animation. Hard to explain what it’s about, just watch.

Ugly Renaissance Babies

Here’s a funny tumblr: Ugly Renaissance Babies. The kids are not allright…
