Leuk stukje op Juno over de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse techno-scene. Van Speedy J en Steve Rachmad tot Delta Funktionen en Legowelt, de Nederlandse techno bloeit al meer dan 20 jaar. Mooi dat dit ook in het buitenland wordt opgemerkt:
Holland doesn’t have the same status as Detroit or Chicago or boast the kind of game-changing clubs that New York and Berlin have been home to, but its importance in electronic music spheres cannot be understated.
Despite Holland being a small country, since the early 90s the creativity and freethinking approach that Dutch artists embraced have ensured that it punches way above its weight.
The outside world first came to know about Dutch techno and house during the early to mid-90s thanks to groundbreaking releases by Speedy J, Gerd, Like A Tim, Steve Rachmad, Erik ‘Shiver/Essit Muzique’ Van Den Broek and Stefan ‘Terrace/Florence’ Robbers and labels like 100% Pure, Eevo Lute, Djax-Up Beats and Outland – which provided platforms for local and international talent.
Around the same time, that other less palatable Dutch musical style, gabba, was exploding, introducing a violent, testosterone-fuelled undercurrent to hardcore dance music. ‘Gabber’ translates from Dutch as ‘pal’ or ‘mate’ and was used as a term of endearment by the amphetamine-riddled skinheads who populated these events.
While gabba endured, Holland’s second wave of techno and house also emerged during the late 90s and early noughties. Spearheaded by Amsterdam’s Delsin label, it provided a home for Newworldaquarium’s spacey house, Aroy Dee’s deep techno and Aardvarck’s abstract beats. It was also during this period that I-F put out Space Invaders are Smoking Grass, a release that inadvertently served as a catalyst for the rise of electroclash.
While I-F had been making visceral techno since the early 90s as Unit Moebius and came from the same acid-soaked squat scene as the long-running Bunker label, the Space Invaders single and timeless Mixed Up In The Hague DJ mixes put the spotlight firmly on the Hague and Holland’s West Coast electro-Italo-jack sound that includes Legowelt, Alden Tyrell, Dexter and Orgue Electronique as well as labels like Viewlexx, Creme and of course Clone.
Fast forward a decade and Clone, along with Amsterdam’s Rush Hour, operate as global hubs for US house and techno focused-music through their three-pronged label-shop-distribution approach. Meanwhile, 2562 and Martyn have offered unique perspectives on bass music. In parallel, the past few years have seen two new Dutch producers, Delta Funktionen (aka Niels Luinenberg) and Conforce (aka Boris Bunnik) revisit the techno sound that originally put Holland on the international map.
Wat kunnen ze toch slecht incasseren bij GeenStijl/PowNed. Eerst wordt er uitermate verongelijkt gereageerd op Rutger Castricums totale déconfiture bij De Wereld Draait Door – wat een volkomen terecht koekje van eigen deeg was. Vervolgens wordt er gehuild en zelfs aangifte gedaan wanneer een – overigens uiterst conservatieve – hoogleraar rechtsfilosofie, Andreas Kinneging, have en goed tegen de opdringerige praktijken van Castricum verdedigt.
Sorry jongens: jullie vonden het toch zo mooi dat een huizenbezitter een indringer met fysieke middelen te lijf kon gaan? Voila. Overigens is op het filmpje (zie onder) nergens te zien dat Kinneging Rutger “bij de keel grijpt”, zoals beweerd wordt. Hij drukt alleen de camera weg, nou, poe poe.
Het punt is: Castricum bedrijft geen journalistiek. Wat hij doet is mensen op een bedreigende en hinderlijke manier lastig vallen. Dat heeft met persvrijheid of vrijheid van meningsuiting helemaal niets te maken. Het is daarom terecht en begrijpelijk dat mensen hier op deze manier op reageren – en eigenlijk zou iedereen dat moeten doen. De pathos van GeenStijl – wederom pruilend huilie huilie doen dat hun zogenaamde verslaggevertjes zo slecht behandeld worden – slaat daarom de plank volledig mis.
Jullie zijn niet zielig. What goes around comes around gasten. Doei!
Interesting stuff: historical research has shown that in the past, people used to sleep in two segments of four hours, with a waking period in between, rather than eight hours straight. This used to be the normal sleeping pattern until the late seventeenth century! Only by the 1920s, the eight-hour schedule had become the norm.
Different explanations, such as the development of street lights, account for this change. Historical documents also show that people used to do a lot in between two segments of sleep, such as pray, eat, write, have sex, visit the neighbours, etc. It may very well be that the current modern mass problem of insomnia results from the incapability of people to actually sleep for eight hours straight, which may be unnatural.
I’m pretty convinced that the modern-day demands of working life (getting up early in the morning, going to bed early in the night) are a straightjacket that is very unnatural for a lot of people who are naturally inclined to be ‘evening people’. This research shows that this wasn’t always the case, but rather coincided with the advent of modernity.
In 2001, historian Roger Ekirch of Virginia Tech published a seminal paper, drawn from 16 years of research, revealing a wealth of historical evidence that humans used to sleep in two distinct chunks.
His book At Day’s Close: Night in Times Past, published four years later, unearths more than 500 references to a segmented sleeping pattern – in diaries, court records, medical books and literature, from Homer’s Odyssey to an anthropological account of modern tribes in Nigeria.
Much like the experience of Wehr’s subjects, these references describe a first sleep which began about two hours after dusk, followed by waking period of one or two hours and then a second sleep.
“It’s not just the number of references – it is the way they refer to it, as if it was common knowledge,” Ekirch says.
During this waking period people were quite active. They often got up, went to the toilet or smoked tobacco and some even visited neighbours. Most people stayed in bed, read, wrote and often prayed. Countless prayer manuals from the late 15th Century offered special prayers for the hours in between sleeps.
And these hours weren’t entirely solitary – people often chatted to bed-fellows or had sex.
A doctor’s manual from 16th Century France even advised couples that the best time to conceive was not at the end of a long day’s labour but “after the first sleep”, when “they have more enjoyment” and “do it better”.
Ekirch found that references to the first and second sleep started to disappear during the late 17th Century. This started among the urban upper classes in northern Europe and over the course of the next 200 years filtered down to the rest of Western society.
By the 1920s the idea of a first and second sleep had receded entirely from our social consciousness.
He attributes the initial shift to improvements in street lighting, domestic lighting and a surge in coffee houses – which were sometimes open all night. As the night became a place for legitimate activity and as that activity increased, the length of time people could dedicate to rest dwindled.
Wijze, harde en terechte woorden van Ronald Plasterk. We hebben een kabinet met partijen die er altijd prat op gaan grootmeesters in de economie te zijn: VVD en CDA. Geen “potverteerders”, zoals “links”. Hun in steen gebeitelde dogma is dat wanneer het economisch slecht gaat, je moet bezuinigen. Klinkt dat contradictoir? Ja, en dat is het ook.
Nederland doet het inmiddels dan ook superslecht qua economische groei. Van de ons omringende landen zijn we de enige die krimpen (met 0,9 procent), de rest groeit. Alleen in Zuid-Europa gaat het nog slechter. De reden? Achterblijvende binnenlandse bestedingen ten gevolge van bezuinigingen, en onzekerheid over de woningmarkt.
Beide oorzaken zijn 1-op-1 terug te voeren op het kabinetsbeleid: bezuinigen en extra bezuinigen, en weigeren serieus werk te maken van hervormingen op de woningmarkt. Bedankt, Rutte c.s.! Nu komt er weer een nieuwe bezuinigingsronde aan, en weer zullen de coalitiepartijen weigeren de hypotheekrenteaftrek aan te pakken. Dit tegen het advies van alle economen, topambtenaren en belanghebbenden in.
Het kabinet-Rutte herhaalt het beleid van Colijn in de jaren dertig. We weten hoe dat is geeïndigd.

A while back I promised you a cooled down, chilled edition of the FNS. Well, here it is. You could even say it is more appropriate for a Sunday afternoon than a Friday night, but don’t let that put you off. This mix is filled with some great slow tracks (100-110 BPM), spanning three decades of electronic music history. Martijn van Dam en Diederik Samson stelden zich gisteren allebei kandidaat voor het fractievoorzitterschap van de PvdA. ‘s Avonds was het direct tijd voor de vuurdoop. Bij Vara-programma’s De Wereld Draait Door en Pauw en Witteman werden de beide kandidaten ondervraagd over hun motivatie en ideeën.
Als je naar de twee optredens kijkt dan heeft Samson toch wel duidelijk de eerste slag gewonnen. Waar Van Dam zat te hakkelen en zweten kwam Samson overtuigend en standvastig over. Wel moet gezegd moet worden dat het geen eerlijke strijd was, want Van Dam werd compleet geroosterd bij DWDD, terwijl Samson in staat werd gesteld om in een prettige sfeer, heel rustig zijn verhaal te doen. - Je begrijpt het verschil tussen de mediawerkelijkheid, de politieke werkelijkheid en dé werkelijkheid.
- In crisissituaties kies je voor de dialoog, waarbij je iedere partij met respect bejegent, bereid bent water bij de wijn te doen, maar wel zodanig dat de eigen sociaal-democratische wortels zichtbaar overeind blijven, hoewel je natuurlijk beseft dat de wereld niet ophoudt bij jouw eigen ideologie.
- Je bent goed op de hoogte van het multiculturele debat van de afgelopen 12 jaar. Je beschouwt de multiculturele samenleving niet bij voorbaat als mislukt, maar beseft tevens dat er nog een hoop werk te verrichten is om deze te doen slagen, mits we daar op een fatsoenlijke, rechtvaardige, sociale en kordate wijze mee aan de slag gaan. Het gaat om taal, werk en onderwijs. Niet je afkomst, maar je toekomst telt en dat vind jij ook.
- Je ziet Nederland in Europees verband, maar stuurt niet aan op ons land als Europese provincie. Hoewel je in eerste instantie gaat voor Nederlands toekomst in Europa stel je onze eigen nationale identiteit voorop.
- Je treedt sterk naar voren in gepaste terughoudendheid.

Now this is a thorough piece of journalism by William Saletan on Slate. It is a very detailed account of Romney’s standpoint on abortion throughout his political career. Abortion is the ultimate issue in the so-called “culture wars”, which, although some claim we live in a post-”culture war” era, still play a big role in American politics (for example shown in Andrew Sullivan’s coverpiece in last week’s Newsweek). Rick Santorum’s clear position on this issue has already won him a couple of Southern primaries and Romney’s ambivalent position can possibly do him (or is already doing) a lot of harm among social conservatives.
The main point of the article is summarized here:
When you see the story in its full context, three things become clear. First, this was no flip-flop. Romney is a man with many facets, groping his way through a series of fluid positions on an array of difficult issues. His journey isn’t complete. It never will be. Second, for Romney, abortion was never really a policy question. He didn’t want to change the law. What he wanted to change was his identity. And third, the malleability at Romney’s core is as much about his past as about his future. Again and again, he has struggled to make sense not just of what he should do, but of who he has been. The problem with Romney isn’t that he keeps changing his mind. The problem is that he keeps changing his story.
But I strongly recommend to read it in its entirety. It is not only gives a clear history of Romney’s position on abortion, but also shines light on his character. As the author puts it:
Romney believes in telling the truth and keeping his promises. But sometimes he wishes the truth or his promise had happened in a different way. He wishes he could change it. And in his mind, he does change it. He reinterprets his statements, positions, and pledges. He edits his motives and reasons. He compresses intervals. He inflates moments. He tightens the narrative. He rewrites his lines. Yet he always finds a thread of truth on which to hang his revised history. He’s a master of the technicality.
He’s also a gifted salesman. He learns your language and puts you at ease. He gives you the version of his record, position, or motive that will please you most. When he comes down on your side, it’s intentional. When he doesn’t, it’s inadvertent. He focuses not on communicating his beliefs but on formulating, framing, or withholding them for political effect. He tells moving stories of personal experience to show you his sincerity. Then, if necessary, he erases those stories from his playbook and his memory.
De strijd om het politiek leiderschap is losgebarsten bij de PvdA. Om 12:00 heeft Martijn van Dam zich kandidaat gesteld, met behulp van een klein social media offensiefje (hier, hier en hier). Als hij het slim speelt maakt hij een goede kans denk ik. Plasterk is iets teveel Cohen, geen PvdA’er zit te wachten op Timmermans, en Samson moet eerst nog aan zijn vrouw vragen of hij mee mag doen.
Van Dam is nog relatief jong en fris en hij presteert meestal redelijk (op een paar flaters na, maar die is iedereen al weer vergeten) in debatten. Ook is hij één van de weinige TK-leden die goed op de hoogte is van de debatten over internetvrijheid die op Europees niveau worden gevoerd. Hij heeft natuurlijk wel een beetje een D66-kop. Nu is het wachten op de reacties van Plasterk en Samsom. Will be continued…

Iedereen heeft het waarschijnlijk al gezien, maar voor degenen die dit prachtige tv-moment hebben gemist, bij deze. Rutger Castricum die al steunend en zwetend wordt afgemaakt in De Wereld Draait Door. Ik ben normaal gesproken geen fan van Felix Rottenberg en Frenk van der Linden, en ben nog steeds van mening dat DWDD al jaren over het hoogtepunt heen is, maar dit was toch wel even erg fijn.
Ja het was vermakelijk toen hij Vogelaar aan het huilen kreeg en oh wat hebben we gelachen toen Plasterk zich door hem liet vernederen op Ibiza, maar het werd tijd dat iemand die doorgesnoven malloot eens hard aanpakte. De grote bully die eindelijk een ferme pets op de neus krijgt. Vooral 6:00 tot het moment dat Van Nieuwkerk zegt “Je maakt een bange indruk man” (7:10) is het genieten geblazen. Een soort posthume wraak van Cohen. Kijk uit Rutger! Felix Rottenberg achter je!

After a quick scan through the tracks it seems that Personality is a mixture of his older dark dubstep work and the recent rave-inspired EP Adrenalin. It’s also very accessible, especially when compared to his latest record Triangulation. Lots of promising stuff!
