Braids – Native Speaker / Lemonade

Check out these two fantastic, hypnotizing indie songs by the Canadian art rock band Braids, from their 2011 album Native Speaker. It reverberates and mesmerizes, not having a clear beginning and end. If anything, I’d describe it as a mixture of Sigur Rós, Purity Ring and Julianna Barwick… Lots of loops, nature sounds, trippy electronic details, background choirs and female vocals going up and down.

Experimental, psychedelic and relaxing stuff.

- Edit: Glass Deers is also fantastic. These guys are good.

David Lynch Presents First Electronic Album On Ibiza

I can’t believe I just typed that headline, but I did. David Lynch – David Lynch! - will deliver (via Skype) the keynote address at the International Dance Music Summit from May 24-29 on Ibiza. He does this in anticipation of his first electronic music album, that he according to Pitchfork has just finished.

The incredible coolness of this is unfathomable.

Listen to Lynch’s first singles on LSD here; listen to the Boys Noize remix here; check out the fan-made video clip here (and check out David Lynch’s hair compared to famous paintings here).

Pitchfork:

Late last year, visionary weirdo filmmaker David Lynch made an unexpected leap into dance music, releasing the single “Good Day Today” on British DJ Rob da Bank’s Sunday Best label. (Lynch talked to Pitchfork in December about finding his way to music.) And now, according to a press release, Lynch has finally completed an entire album of electronic music.

Lynch will deliver the keynote address at the dance music industry event the International Music Summit, taking place in the dance mecca of Ibiza May 24-29. Lynch’s address goes down May 26 at the Ibiza Gran Hotel, but Lynch won’t actually be there in person. Instead, he and engineer “Big” Dean Hurley will be interviewed via Skype from Lynch’s L.A. studio. According to the press release, Lynch and Hurley plan to “show us exactly how they made the music and how they turn it out in Lynch’s studio.”

The International Music Summit will also feature performances from people like Hercules and Love Affair, 2 Many DJ’s, Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, Luciano, and many others.

Anish Kapoor’s ‘Leviathan’ @ Grand Palais Paris

Each year, the French Ministry of Culture invites an artist to create a site-specific work for the Grand Palais in Paris.

This year, Anish Kapoor has created Leviathan, a huge balloon-like structure completely immersing visitors.

Entitled Leviathan, Kapoor’s sculpture is a breathtaking 35 meters high. ”My ambition,” the artist shares, “is to create a space within a space that responds to the height and luminosity of the Nave at the Grand Palais. Visitors will be invited to walk inside the work, to immerse themselves in colour, and it will, I hope, be a contemplative and poetic experience.”

(…)

Visitors first experience Leviathan from the structure’s interior, where they are surrounded by a glowing red atmosphere, engaging in a total sensorial immersion. Then, like emerging from the belly of a giant whale, visitors exit the structure — where only then that they comprehend the full scale of where they have been.
