Er was een tijd dat de sociaal-democraten op het Malieveld stonden te demonstreren, klaar om de revolutie uit te roepen en de monarch van zijn kroon te ontdoen, slechts tegengehouden door woedende Oranjeklanten.
Maar die tijd is niet meer. Tegenwoordig is het dankzij de PvdA dat de vorstin haar invloed op de regeringsformatie behoudt. Wat is er gebeurd met die progressieve idealen, met dat Amsterdams republikanisme? Thanks dudes.
Geert Wilders zal met een wetsvoorstel komen om de koning(in) uit de regering te zetten, zodat een puur ceremonieel koningschap ontstaat, zoals in Zweden. GroenLinks, D66 en SP steunen de PVV. Samen beschikken deze partijen over 71 zetels in de Tweede Kamer. Met de dertig van de PvdA erbij is er zelfs een ruime Kamermeerderheid. Maar de PvdA steunt het voorstel niet en laat daarmee een historische kans liggen. Immers, in beginsel zijn de sociaal-democraten tegen het erfelijk koningschap. Waarom pakken ze deze unieke kans niet?
Tweede Kamerlid Pierre Heijnen, woordvoerder van de PvdA: „Welk probleem lossen we eigenlijk op, als we dat voorstel van Wilders steunen? Feitelijk is er al een ceremonieel koningschap. De koningin heeft geen invloed op het regeringsbeleid. De letter van de wet – dat de koning deel is van de regering – suggereert op dit punt meer dan er in feite is. Het lijkt erop dat Wilders een niet bestaand probleem wil oplossen.”
Speelt bij de afwijzing een rol dat Wilders het voorstelt? Heijnen: „Ik vind dat je achterliggende motieven mee mag laten wegen bij de beoordeling van voorstellen. Welke boodschap wil Wilders de wereld insturen? Hij wil zich afzetten tegen de elite. Maar laten we oppassen om de bijl te zetten in belangrijke instituten en symbolen. De koningin is een symbool voor Nederland. Net zoals tulpen dat zijn. Zij maakt mede dat Nederland Nederland is. In die zin begrijp ik niet goed dat Wilders zo’n identiteitsbepalend symbool wil aanpakken. De koningin staat voor continuïteit, eenheid, herkenning. Voor je het weet doe je daaraan afbreuk.”
i am torn on this. on one hand I am no fan of the monarchy, generally (nothing personal Beatrix!). On the other, there is little denying that her majesty has become a strong institution in Dutch politics (too strong perhaps), that holds a great deal of institutional memory on Dutch government (more than anyone in it even perhaps!), and I think, frankly, that she helps add order to what might be chaos at times in her absence. When Rutte nearly got ahead of the formateurs, the spectre of pissing off the Queen quickly had everyone back in line. Now of course this is not to say that in the absence of a strong monarch that honourable behaviour is impossible.
But, again Canada is a good example here. with a relatively week monarch/head of state, and insufficiently clear conventions on transitions of power around prorogation, dissolution, confidence and changes of government we have found ourselves on the brink of a couple of constitutional crises. this is a road that should be gone down with great caution, clear thinking and strong efforts of institutional and constitutional design.
Well. I’ve been a proponent of stripping the monarchy of political functions for ages, and I’m not gonna revert that just because Wilders is now the main actor advocating it, as the PvdA does. Having a monarchy is fine (as long as that’s what people want), but only in a ceremonial way. I just don’t see why you’d wanna have this autocratic, unaccountable element in your constitutional-democratic system; if it’s stability and “wisdom” you want, you might institute an unelected president/figurehead who from time to time interferes as well. From a democratic perspective, there’s – I think – simply no argument in favour of having this untouchable, autonomous element in your institutional design. From a pragmatic point of view, maybe…
well, i am not swayed that an “unelected president/figurehead” is any less autocratic or any more accountable. there is no doubt that any kind of unelected official, whether hereditary or a political. And that is why, as I said I am not fully in favour. But I maintain that doing it too quickly without putting proper conventions is place is a disaster. I am not sure I trust Wilders to take care of that end.

well i do like that he wants a debate not just a knee-jerk reaction and that he is thinking about how the changes should be made/what institutions should fill the void. Its not that I am totally opposed to the change, i just want to make sure that whatever replaces it is well thought out and the new institutions/rules are formalized so y’all don;t end up with the mess we have!
Sure, you have to be careful. But there’s already a majority consensus that next time around, the Queen will be less involved in the formation process (f.e., the 2nd Chamber should appoint its own informateur). Beatrix’ interventions have done her harm, after all. I think when her sons ascends, that would be a great time to move to a ceremonial monarchy.
