Aaron O’Connell and colleagues at the University of California, Santa Barbara, did not actually produce a cat that was dead and alive at the same time, as Erwin Schrödinger proposed in a notorious thought experiment 75 years ago. But they did show that a tiny resonating strip of metal – only 60 micrometres long, but big enough to be seen without a microscope – can both oscillate and not oscillate at the same time. Alas, you couldn’t actually see the effect happening, because that very act of observation would take it out of superposition.
“We talk about quantum weirdness and things being in two places at once, but it all involves atoms and molecules, stuff we don’t normally interact with,” says O’Connell, who presented the results at the March meeting of the American Physical Society in Portland, Oregon, today.

De deal betekent dat de door het Witte Huis gewenste sluiting er eindelijk komt. Maar in ruil daarvoor moet de regering van president Barack Obama afzien van plannen om de terreurverdachten door een gewone rechtbank te laten berechten. Daar zouden de verdachten meer rechten hebben dan bij een militaire commissie.
Hmm, “meer rechten” bij een gewone rechtbank. Waar is dat nou voor nodig? Doe dan maar een militaire commissie. Wat een goed plan van Obama!
Wat je in De Volkskrant niet leest is dat tot voor 2001 in de V.S., en nog altijd in de rest van de rechtsstatelijke wereld, het civiele rechtssysteem dé plek is waar terrorismeverdachten berecht worden. En met succes. En wat De Volkskrant ook niet vermeldt, is dat de militaire tribunalen onder Bush-Cheney zeer controversieel waren; het Supreme Court heeft ze zelfs een aantal maal neergeslagen. Nu Obama het echter doet, is het ineens goed.
De rechtbank is niet een plek waar “meer rechten” worden toegekend. Het is de baseline. Quasi-legale inventies, zoals Obama’s militaire tribunalen, zijn de uitzondering. Het zou De Volkskrant sieren als ze dit zou vermelden. En als ze dan gelijk zouden rapporteren op welke flagrante wijze Obama bijna al zijn verkiezingsbeloftes over terreurbeleid en burgerrechten heeft geschonden, zouden ze goed bezig zijn.
