Het zit de gloednieuwe stadspartij Sociaal Delfzijl uit de Groningse havenstad niet mee; nadat vorige week een heuse playmate laaiend aan de bel trok over het ongevraagde gebruik van een pikante blootfoto van haar borsten op een postertje is er nu weer een kandidaat-raadslid door de politie gehoord over mogelijke betrokkenheid bij wietteelt.
Kandidaat-raadslid Delroy O. (24) van Sociaal Delfzijl werd vorige maand gehoord op verdenking van betrokkenheid bij een hennepkwekerijtje met driehonderd planten. ,,Dat was al vorige maand en dan komt het nu ineens naar buiten, dit is weer Delfzijl hoor, dit is allemaal geen toeval’’, aldus een getergde woordvoerder Loet Meintsma, de nummer twee op de lijst. ,,Hier zit vast meer achter.’’ Hij baalt stevig. ,,We willen er zijn voor de Delfzijlster met de lagere inkomens en dan nu dit weer!’’
O. heeft echter bezworen helemaal niks met de contrabande van doen te hebben.
De VVD Enschede heeft het goed bekeken: naar een campagnefilmpje met een chicka blijf je wel kijken. Props voor de loeiende sirene en het verkeersbord, alsmede de striptease op 1.00.
Er komen op 9 juni Tweede Kamerverkiezingen. Koningin Beatrix heeft aan premier Jan Peter Balkenende gevraagd daarvoor te zorgen, zo maakt haar kabinet vanmiddag bekend.
Aan alle PvdA-bewindslieden is door de koningin ontslag verleend. PvdA-ministers worden vervangen door ministers van het CDA en de ChristenUnie. CDA’er Ernst Hirsch Ballin, nu minister van Justitie, krijgt Binnenlandse Zaken erbij. André Rouvoet, minister van Jeugd en Gezin, neemt het ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap onder zijn hoede. ChristenUnie-minister Eimert van Middelkoop krijgt naast Defensie ook Wonen, Wijken en Integratie erbij. Staatssecretaris Jan Cees de Jager van Financiën wordt minister op dat departement. Staatssecretaris Tineke Huizinga wordt minister van Volkshuisvesting, Ruimtelijke Ordening en Milieubeheer.
Het huidige kabinet gaat door als demissionair kabinet, dus helaas komt er géén Balkenende-V (althans nu) en dus ook geen Balkenende-VI. Jammer, het leek me vanuit parlementair historisch oogpunt wel leuk als het record van Colijn met vijf kabinetten verbroken zou worden.
Er komt geen rompkabinet Balkenende V. Het huidige kabinet gaat dus in demissionaire status verder. In dat verband heeft de koningin „de bewindslieden gevraagd al datgene te blijven verrichten wat zij in het belang van het Koninkrijk noodzakelijk achten”. Vanaf nu tot na de formatie van een nieuw kabinet, zullen CDA en ChristenUnie met een minimaal mandaat het landsbestuur op zich nemen.
Matthew Yglesias is the one of the few American bloggers that I know of who regularly writes about European politics. He now has an interesting take on the breakdown of the Dutch Balkenende IV cabinet because of a political dispute on the continuation of the Dutch military mission in Afghanistan.
He writes:
For what it’s worth, I don’t think it’s quite fair to say that NATO’s push to get the Dutch to extent their troop deployment to Afghanistan was “the cause” of the breakdown of the grand coalition that had been governing the Netherlands. Rather it looks to me like Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende rather cleverly found a way to use it as a pretext to shift the political situation to his advantage.
Basically now he’s created the circumstances where the Dutch military will leave Afghanistan, which is what most Dutch voters want, but wherein he also gets to blame the Labor Party for having forced this situation and diminished the Netherlands’ standing in the eyes of NATO and the United States. He has a good talking point in which he can accuse Labor, his main partner in the coalition but also his main political rival, of irresponsibility while also reassuring the voters that the troops will be coming home one way or another.
As several commenters say, this interpretation has not featured yet in the Dutch media. Although interesting, I think it is wrong on several counts. First, I don’t think the Dutch public, like any other public anywhere, cares very much about the reputation of their country in international politics. This will therefore not be such a great argument in the hands of Balkenende and his party, the CDA. Second, I think Balkenende and his associates in the cabinet in all honesty did not want the troops to come home; they really wanted a prolongation, as they did fear the damage to the reputation of the Netherlands abroad. Thirdly – and here I venture into my own “analysis” - I think it is ridiculous for Balkenende and the CDA to blame the damage to the international reputation of the Netherlands, which is indisputably there, solely to the PvdA (Labour Party). Looking at some reconstructions of the crucial last meeting of the council of ministers, one can see that Balkenende made demands on the PvdA which they could impossibly fulfill – basically asking for a complete turnabout of their position. If Balkenende and the CDA cared so much for the international reputation of the Netherlands, they should have made room for a compromise to which the PvdA could agree, like an elaborate training mission in Afghanistan. But this requires responsibleleadership. And that, as after eight years of governance might be deducted, is what Balkenende utterly lacks.

The fact is that expiration dates mean very little. Food starts to deteriorate from the moment it’s harvested, butchered, or processed, but the rate at which it spoils depends less on time than on the conditions under which it’s stored. Moisture and warmth are especially detrimental. A package of ground meat, say, will stay fresher longer if placed near the coldest part of a refrigerator (below 40 degrees Fahrenheit), than next to the heat-emitting light bulb. Besides, as University of Minnesota food scientist Ted Labuza explained to me, expiration dates address quality—optimum freshness—rather than safety and are extremely conservative. To account for all manner of consumer, manufacturers imagine how the laziest people with the most undesirable kitchens might store and handle their food, then test their products based on these criteria.
With perishables like milk and meat, most responsible consumers (those who refrigerate their groceries as soon as they get home, for instance) have a three–to-seven-day grace period after the “Sell by” date has elapsed. As for pre-packaged greens, studies show that nutrient loss in vegetables is linked to a decline in appearance. When your broccoli florets yellow or your green beans shrivel, this signals a depletion of vitamins. But if they haven’t lost their looks, ignore the printed date. Pasta and rice will taste fine for a year. Unopened packs of cookies are edible for months before the fat oxidizes and they turn rancid. Pancake and cake mixes have at least six months. Canned items are potentially the safest foods around and will keep five years or more if stored in a cold pantry. Labuza recalls a seven-year-old can of chicken chunks he ate recently. “It tasted just like chicken,” he said.
Daarmee komt een einde aan een periode waarin roken in kleinere cafe’s weer gedoogd werd. De laatste tijd zag je dit ook steeds meer terug komen. Wat mij betreft een perfecte situatie: in plaats van rücksichtlos alles verbieden, een markt waarin 70-80% van de horeca-gelegenheden rookvrij is, en in 20-30% gerookt werd. Dit correleert perfect met het percentage rokers in Nederland. Op die manier laat je de markt vrij, heeft iedereen wat te kiezen, en is iedereen blij.
Bij de gezondheidsfanatici gaat dit er echter niet in: iedereen moet conformeren. Hopelijk gaat de burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid jegens de betuttelende staat dan ook door.
